Analysis and estimation of radiation influent on humans and environment of liquid radiation wastes withdrawal from Nuclear Medicine Department

The aim of the above paper was to estimate the radiation hazard of people and environment as the result of 131I emission after treatment of patients with thyroid overactivity as well as additional therapy after radical surgery in case of differential thyroid cancer.
The Endocrynology and Isotope Therapy Department and Nuclear Medicine Center are both located in separate facility of Central Military Hospital Military University of Medicine that has the separate close loop wastes system. The high activity wastes are released to the mentioned system only.
Refilling of reservoir depends on how often patients use toilet. It usually takes 20÷30 days. After refilling the reservoir is closed. The time after which wastes are to be released to the municipal sewage is estimated by monitoring of specific activity collected in the reservoir.
Based upon a numerical model the concentration of radioiodine in ingestion system and thyroid and radiation doses for hypothetic riverside habitant was determinated.
Average annual dose equivalent for the reference adult and kid habiting on the riverside was equal to 2,7 mSv and 16 mSv, respectively. Those values are significantly smaller from dose limit.
It is necessary to predict how the particular patient thyroid dysfunction will effect on increation of radioiodine expelling. It is advised to not post such a patients commonly to one therapeutic group.
