Purpose A study was conducted to examine surgical approach for the management of patients with open-angle glaucoma, in which Schlemm's canal is opened to restore drainage in a non penetrating fashion. Compared over the results of the surgical procedure including new modification of sinusectomy with the results of standard trabeculectomy. Material and methods The study concerns 82 patients with primary open angle glaucoma. A new type of surgical procedure performed on 40 consecutive patients (Group I). Trabeculectomy performed on 42 patients (Group II). Data, including visual acuity, intraocular pressure, complications and the number of medications required to maintain adequate pressures, were analyzed. The follow-up time ranged from 6 months to 3 years. Results After 24 months postoperatively, 88,4% (Group I) and 91% (Group II) of the patients achieved an intraocular pressure lower than 21 mmHg. Conclusions The non penetrating technique to open the canal effectively, allows the drainage of aqueous to acceptable levels, without the complications associated with trabeculectomy. |
