Demographic factors compared with the general quality of life of patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes

Introduction. Diabetes affects the quality of life undoubtedly. Many authors draws attention to the poorer quality of life of patients with
diabetes type 1 and 2, because it is a chronic disease, and every incurable, long-standing illness affects QoL. Good quality of life of every
human being is a goal. The person who is happy with life, full of joy and motivation to constantly improve this satisfaction has it. The concept
of quality of life (QoL) is a subjective sensation assessed from the perspective of each person and it is diffrent for different people.

Aim of the study. Investigating the influence of demographic factors on the quality of life of patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes.

Material and methods. The analysis included 100 respondents from the Lodz region hospitalized in the Department of Internal Hospital in
Belchatow and treated at the Diabetes Clinic of the same hospital, and patients of the Department of Diabetology and Metabolic Diseases in
Lodz in Clinical Hospital No. 1 in the years 2010–2011. The study was conducted by the diagnostic survey and as the research tools were
used two types of surveys. The first one was own, the second one was the standardized questionnaire by Clare Bradley ADDQoL. Test Chi
— square was used for analysis of data. The strength of the relationship between the studied variables were calculated using Cramer’s V
coefficient.

Results. Results of conducted research are most consistent with the results of analyzed literature. Regardless of type, diabetes mellitus
decreasing the general quality of life significantly. Situation of deterioration of the quality of life is connected by respondents with the age of
diabetes diagnosis as the younger age, the worse the quality of life. It was also found that the quality of life deteriorates as the duration of the
disease. General impression of life satisfaction of patients with diabetes is not dependent on gender.
