Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases, very often treated by the general practitioners. Heartburn and regurgitations are typical symptoms of GERD. However, in some cases the clinical course of GERD is less typical and it can lead to serious complications. One of the most important complications is Barrett’s oesophagus (BE) and oesophageal adenocarcinoma, which can develop from dysplastic lesions in BE. That is why it is essential to know how to diagnose and treat GERD and when to send the patient to a specialist in order to implement novel therapeutic modalities in the most difficult cases.
