Toxocarosis is a zoonosis caused by the ascarid nematodes Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati. There are five forms of toxocarosis: visceral larva migrans (VLM), ocular larva migrans (OLM), neurotoxocarosis, covert toxocarosis (CT) and asymptomatic toxocarosis. Molecular biology offers a wide range of tools applicable for the identification of parasites. It is an essential supplement of serological blood tests and microscopic observations of the morphological features of the nematode, widely used in diagnosis of toxocarosis. The aim of this paper is to present possibilities of molecular diagnosis of toxocarosis using: PCR (polymerase chain reaction), RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism), SSCP (single strand conformation polymorphism) and RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA). Also described is the significance of internal transcribed spacers (ITS) – noncoding, species-specific regions of DNA sequence which separate genes coding rRNA, which can be useful in diagnosis of toxocarosis.
