Individual approach to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) management is key for successful treatment of this disease which may manifest a diversified group of clinic symptoms. Depending on the symptoms presented by patients, GERD should be diagnosed with relevant methods including endoscopy and/or diagnostic tests, to better determine the variation of the disease and optimize treatment. Over the past three decades proton pump inhibitors (PPI) have been considered the mainstay of treatment for GERD. However, recently there has been an increasing consciousness regarding the side effects of the PPI. This article describes the most recent study results regarding optimal and individualized management strategies for GERD.
