Chronic kidney disease has become a major public health problem due to its high prevalence and large reductions in quality of life of affected people. Most of cases of end-stage renal disease are due to diabetes and hypertension, conditions which are usually managed by primary care physicians. Early detection of chronic kidney disease is very important because the effective treatment methods for slowing progression are available and should be performed as earliest as possible. Chronic kidney disease can be diagnosed by simple blood and urine tests, as recommended in guidelines issued by the National Kidney Foundation. In this article authors present diagnostic tests which are available in general practice and should be regularly used especially in patients with such risk factors as diabetes and hypertension. Authors discuss the role of family doctors in early detection of chronic kidney disease.
