Enucleation in the material of the Department of Ophthalmology of Military Institute of Medicine in Warsaw in 2014–2018

Purpose
To analyze medical records of patients undergoing enucleation or secondary orbital implantation at the Department of Ophthalmology of Military Institute of Medicine in Warsaw in 2014–2018. Material and methods Medical records of 82 patients were analyzed. Retrospective analysis included clinical and epidemiological data. Results Records of 34 women and 48 men at the age from 19 to 87 years (mean age 53.2 years) were included in the analysis. Trauma was the most frequent cause of enucleation (52.4%), followed by glaucoma (17.1%), corneal diseases (11%), phthisis bulbi (11%), endophthalmitis (6.1%) and keratouveitis (2.4%). There were more enucleations for trauma in males. 87.8% of all patients underwent orbital implantation. 64 patients underwent primary orbital implantation (hydroxyapatite implant – 4 eyes and bioceramic implant – 64 eyes). 8 patients received a secondary bioceramic orbital implant. Conclusions In our cohort, trauma was the main cause of enucleation. A consistent and standardized system should be used for describing the type of eye injury. It facilitates communication between specialists, collection of epidemiological data and estimating prognosis. Orbital implantation, including secondary implants, offers a very good cosmetic effect. keywords:
