Dear Colleagues,
We are very pleased to present you with the next issue of the Journal of Health Inequalities. This time the Journal takes the form of a special edition, principally devoted to the recent scientific meeting organised on 24-25 October 2021 at the President Stanisław Wojciechowski Calisia University, Kalisz, Poland – the 2nd Calisia World Conference on Family Health. Overview of health development in Poland (please visit www.calisiaconference.org to find the programme and video recording). Nearly 4,500 participants from Poland and other countries registered at the conference system.
In the first part of this issue, you will find the summary of the Calisia Conference. We are very grateful to the esteemed researchers participating in the conference who in just a few weeks were able to provide us with the necessary materials. Especially, we are honoured to welcome the President-Elect of the British Medical Association – Professor Martin McKee (Professor of European Public Health at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine), the world expert in alcohol, Professor Jurgen Rehm from the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, Canada, the former Minister of Health, the present Member of the Parliament of Lithuania – Professor Aurelijus Veryga, and the former Undersecretary od State at the Ministry of Finance, assistant professor at Faculty of Economics and Sociology at University of Łódź – dr Jarosław Neneman. We would like to bring to your attention to an article by Professor Martin McKee devoted to the coronavirus pandemic and the recently published European report on health and sustainable development in the light of the pandemic. During the conference, the most important topics for discussion were: the burden of alcohol- and tobacco-related diseases in certain European countries. It is interesting to read contributions from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Italy summarising the alcohol-related burden and the role of tobacco in shaping the health situation in these countries. We especially recommend the article by Leif Aaro et al. summarizing the discussions from the Conference.
The second part of this issue turns to papers accepted for publication in the Journal. Among them is an interesting review done by students and researchers from the Poznan University of Medical Sciences on using telemedicine in cardiology, and a review on medical errors and negligence as a premise of liability for damage caused to patients in Poland. We also present an analysis prepared by the group of researchers from the Wroclaw University of Health and Sport Sciences and the Calisia University on youth attitudes towards disability, and a paper by research fellows of the Jagiellonian University Medical College on sexual health problems in patients with motor disabilities in Poland.
We are honoured that the number of articles prepared in collaboration with renowned public health experts and young researchers from Poland and other countries is rising substantially. Continuously, our editorial team aims to raise the scientific level of the Journal. We are delighted that our efforts have been appreciated and proud to inform you that the Minister of Education and Science awarded our Journal 100 points in December 2021. This is the joint success of numerous people who contributed to our success. Once again, we would like to thank all authors and collaborators who contributed to the present and past issues of the Journal.
