Diabetes may appear throughout life from birth to old age. However, statistically type 1 diabetes is most frequent in young people, and type 2 diabetes is more frequent in older people over 40 years of age. Due to the chronic character of the disease there is a possibility of complications, the probability of which grows with the duration of the disease. That is why preventive actions in the care of the ill are of great significance. One of the most effective methods of treatment in the case of type 1 diabetes that leads to the best possible metabolic equalization is intensive functional insulin therapy. This method of treatment demands high substantial and teaching qualifications from the whole therapeutic team. The nurse as a member of the therapeutic team plays a significant educational role for the patients and their family. In her actions she pays attention to, among others: the ability to correctly calculate the doses of insulin, and the influence of physical activities on the modification of insulin dosage.
