Introduction
The independence of patients with stoma depends on their physical and intellectual self-efficiency. Aim The aim of this study is to present multi-dimensionality of problems faced by elderly patients diagnosed with stoma. Overview In stoma treatment, it is important to motivate patients to be active and hold onto the belief that normal life with stoma is possible. This requires tailored patient education introduced by the nurse, the choice of the right stoma equipment, the correct use of the equipment by the patient, his or her physical and psycho-so¬cial rehabilitation. A right diet, regular defecation and physical and social activity are also crucial for stoma patients. Conclusions 1. What is particularly important for the patients diagnosed with stoma trying to retain their independence are professionalism of medical personnel, support from the family and the rehabilitation, before and after the surgery, as well as the support of volunteers and self-help groups. 2. Elderly patients can better adapt to life with stoma than younger patients. |
