Changes in the roles of a professional nurse

Since the establishment of the first professional, secular and modern nursing school in 1860 by F. Nightingale, the role of a nurse has been
constantly changing. The genesis of defining the role of a nurse reaches the 19th century, when first attempts were made to regularise the
remarks assembled during the work of F. Nightingale.
Aim of this study is to outline the description and clarification of the role of nurses by prominent theorists in historical perspective.
The analysis used a few, native texts from literature, mostly based on the achievements of Anglo-American nurses and the materials of the
World Health Organization European Region and the International Council of Nurses. In the studied literature, we seek answers to questions:
What is nursing? What is the mission of nursing? Who is the nurse? Who are the recipients of nursing? What is the self-involved people to keep
and strengthen health?
Reorientation of health care in the 70’s of twentieth century on the primary health care, clearly emphasizes the role of nurses in the functioning
as an independent professional in a hospital environment, facilitating and enabling people to achieve optimal health. The growing
professionalization, widening circles of autonomy and professional responsibility, steadily expanding the roles of professional nurses, creating
a team of professional roles. These changes are a response for expectations and health needs of patients, families and social groups.
Today roles in the new model is preferable to close cooperation between patients, communities, health professionals, other professional
groups, government, local governments.
