Despite the enormous progress in all medical areas that we witness nowadays, the mortality of critically ill patients with acute renal failure is still unacceptably high and does not improve with time. These poor results motivate the renal community to develop new techniques of extra-corporeal blood purification in order to improve the patients’ outcome. One of the new approaches to the treatment of acute renal failure in intensive care unit is the development of the slow, low-efficiency daily dialysis. The Genius system is a special and unique variant of this approach since in this method the fresh and spent dialysate are contained within the same batch and both the blood and dialysate are run by the same, single pump. In this review the progress in the slow-efficacy dialysis technique is discussed.
