Introduction: Overweight and obesity are social, medical and economic problems. Surgical treatment of obesity started in the second half of the 20th century, because of inadequate results of conservative treatment.
Aim: To evaluate the efficiency of chosen methods of surgical treatment of pathological obesity in our own material.
Materials and methods: In our department 38 patients were treated surgically between May 2005 and January 2007 because of morbid obesity. 17 laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) operations and 21 Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) operations were performed.
Results: Noted weight loss after a 1-year observation period was from 29 to 55 kg after LAGB and from 35 to 66 kg after RYGB.
Conclusions: From our observations we conclude that bariatric surgery is the most effective option in morbid obesity treatment.
