The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in adult population of Tarnawa Dolna county

Introduction : The history of metabolic syndrome is short. It started in 1923. In 1988 year Reaven used the X syndrome terminology, in 1999 year WHO specified the term “metabolic syndrome” (MS) as a cluster of risk factors of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. In 2005 year International Diabetes Federation formulated new definition of metabolic syndrome in which obesity was defined as waist circumference. The last consensus arised in 2009 year, when researches agreed that there is enough three from five criterias defined in 2005 year.
Aim : To estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome defined according to IDF 2005 year definition and 2009 year consensus in nonselected adult group of people from Tarnawa Dolna in Podkarpacie and estimation of difference between women and men.
Material and methods : 154 adult people, 101 women and 53 men in median age 52,5 years. Blood pressure and waist circumference were taken, fasting plasma glucose and lipidogram were examined.
Results : Metabolic syndrome according to IDF 2005 year definition 18.83% of all participants were presented and 23.32% of participants according to 2009 year consensus. For women group it was 17.82% and 25.74% respectively. In men group MS according to 2005 year definition 20.75% of examinated were presented and 24.53% respectively.
Conclusions : In comparison to WOBASZ study from 2005 year the prevalence of MS increased as in all examinated group as in women and men group. The most common metabolic disorder in examinated group was central obesity. 69.28% of all group was obese, in women group it was 70.3%, in men group 66%. Other disorders occurred in 20% of all group in both sexes.
