This article is a review of the pathogenesis and treatment of keloids and hypertrophic scars. Hypertrophic scars and keloids are an important problem in medicine. Scars reflect the pattern of healing in previously wounded skin. Excessive scarring can be a result of atypical wound healing. Recent advances in the understanding of immunology and biology of wound healing have allowed for much progress in the therapy of scars. However, the successful treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids is often very long and difficult. The newest topical and systemic drugs currently in use are discussed including surgical, pharmacological and physical treatment.
