Professor Józef Kałużny was born on 17 March 1940 in Główiewo. He completed medical studies in 1964 at the Poznań University of Medical Sciences. In 1973 he earned the title of the Doctor of Medicine, in 1978 the title of Associate Professor. He became a Professor in 1987. On 1 October 1979 J. Kałużny took the helm of the Clinic of eye diseases in Bydgoszcz. His academic achievement is impressive. He produced about 200 scientific works and 3 monographs. He performed over twenty thousand operations, and his interests covered practically all fields of ophthalmology. He was one of the pioneers of the laser treatment in ophthalmology and in 1985, as the first person in Poland during an operation of the cataract he commenced implanting PIOLs.
Professor Kałużny along with a team of physicists constructed the first Polish SOCT apparatus. In the years 1990–1996 he was the rector of the Medical University in Bydgoszcz, he was a member of the board of Polish and foreign ophthalmological societies. He was also an editor of scientific journals devoted to ophthalmology. He died suddenly on 14 January 2018 and was buried in Bydgoszcz. |
