Possibilities of prevention of type 2 diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease of epidemic character, and its treatment involves great costs. For this reason it is vital to early diagnose risk factors of dysfunction in carbohydrate metabolism and early detect type 2 diabetes before appearance of chronic complications. Such procedures may enable better metabolic control, and even regression of dysfunction in carbohydrate metabolism. It is believed that diabetes is diagnosed too late, when chronic complications are present: microangiopathy and macroangiopathy, and the cost of treatment of such patient is enormous. These facts support the idea of introducing preventive measures and a consistent scheme of diagnosis and treatment of early type 2 diabetes. The research described in this paper is an example of such procedures. They show that type 2 diabetes can be prevented and it can be discovered before chronic complications appear. In prevention not only drugs directly influencing carbohydrate metabolism proved effective, but also ACE inhibitors, statins and lipoprotein lipase blockers. Prevention of type 2 diabetes is very difficult but possible. The questions of the form of intervention, the manner of introducing it and when such intervention should be undertaken are still open.
