Gastrointestinal symptoms are common in patients with chronic kidney disease. Uremia affects gastrointestinal tract and may lead to reduced food intake resulting in malnutrition and decreased quality of life. Duodenal and gastric erosions, diffuse antral erythema and duodenal ulcer are frequent endoscopic findings in patients with end-stage renal disease. Peptic ulcer in uremic subjects have different clinical characteristics from peptic ulcer in non-uremic population. Bleeding from angiodysplasia and gastroparesis are more common than in healthy subjects. Dysmotility-like dyspeptic complaints and delayed gastric emptying are highly prevalent in end-stage renal disease. Gastric hypomotility appears to be an important factor in the development of gastrointestinal symptoms in uremic patients. Type of dialysis treatment seems have limited impact on gastrointestinal symptoms.
