The work was aimed to compare the number and types of conducted operations and features of changes among women with benign tumours of the ovaries operated using laparoscopy and laparotomy.
Materials: 213 of women with recognised benign tumours of the ovaries were analysed, among them, in 167 (78.4%) cases laparoscopy was conducted, and in 46 (21.6%) cases, laparotomy. Diagnosis made before the operation included subjective and objective examination as well as additional laboratory and ultrasound examination (USG, Color Doppler, Ca-125). During laparoscopy, in all the cases, endo-bags were used and the material was subject to examination.
Results: Women over 40 (43.5%) who underwent more radical operations (adnexectomy, hysterectomy in 95% of cases) were most frequently operated using the laparotomy method. The excision of appendages using the laparoscopy method was performed only among 24% of women, 97.5% of whom were over 40. Ovary saving operation was performed in patients who underwent laparoscopy and concerned 88.7% of women below 30 years of age and 43.5% of all women operated using laparoscopy.
The histopathological examination most frequently helped to diagnose serous (59.1%), dermoid (19.7%) and endometrial (16.4%) cysts. Women operated using laparoscopy were younger (on average, 34 years old) than those treated using laparotomy (on average, 43.5 years old).
Conclusions: The careful diagnosis before the operation reduces the risk of qualifying patients with malignant changes for laparoscopy, but in carefully chosen cases the laparoscopy itself is an effective and safe way of treating benign tumours of the ovaries.
