Trimetazidine usefully modifies the metabolism of energetic compounds and has antiischaemic characteristics, acting on the cellular level which evidences with anti-anginal effect, increase of exercise test duration and total overload, without any changes in heart rate and systolic blood pressure. In patients with coronary artery disease trimetazidine causes the decrease the frequency of chest pain and application of nitrates. There are also a studies suggesting the beneficial effect of trimetazidine in patients undergoing coronary angioplasty or coronary artery bypass grafting. Primary outcomes obtained in Department of Cardiac Surgery in Lodz suggest that trimetazidine may be very useful in patients subjected to surgical revascularization, but the larger, multicenter studies are required.
