Purpose
To investigate the expression of intercellulare adhesion molecule (ICAM-1) by conjunctival epithelial cells of patients with cystic fibrosis Material and methods 15 patients with cystic fibrosis and 15 control subjects were included in this study. Impression cytology specimens were collected and analyzed by flow cytometry and analyzed by flow cytometry. Results A significant increase of ICAM-1 expression by epithelial cells was found in patients with cystic fibrosis compared with normal eyes. Conclusions Increase of ICAM-1 expression by epithelial cells in cystic fibrosis patients suggests, that the inflammation appears to have a role in the pathogenesis of the ocular surface changes and may be a marker of the inflammatory status in cystic fibrosis. keywords:
