Introduction: Of all health care workers, it is nurses who have the most frequent contact with patients; therefore, patient satisfaction with medical care is predominantly based on the quality of nursing care. The aim of the study was to explore the perception of nurses as well as the factors determining patient satisfaction with nursing care at the same-day surgery ward.

Material and methods: The research covered 100 same-day surgery ward patients aged 20-80. The methods included

a diagnostic survey based on the questionnaire designed and prepared by the research author. The perception of nurses was examined with the Osgood’s semantic differential.

The analysis of the results was conducted using basic descriptive statistics, χ2 test of independence, U Mann-Whitney test and Kendall tau correlation coefficient. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.

Results: 81% of the patients rated the nursing care they had received at the same-day surgical ward as very good;

the remaining 19% of respondents considered it as good.

Female patients tended to evaluate the nursing care much higher than male patients (p < 0.05). Whenever the patient

had obtained a satisfactory level of information about their treatment, they rated nursing care provided highly (p < 0.0001). The score of the perception of nurses was 106.9 points (± 10.1) out of 112.

Conclusions: Patients rated the nursing care as very good, which was primarily influenced by the female sex and a satisfactory level of information about the treatment. Also, the overall perception of nurses at the ward was rated as positive.
