The development of atherosclerosis/macroangiopathy in the course of pre-diabetes and diabetes type 2 is closely related to immune-dependent deteriorations. The evaluation of atherosclerotic pathogenesis, especially its preclinical phases, seems to be an essential step on the way to successful prevention of atherosclerosis. Therefore NKT cells arouse our interest in their role in early phases of atherosclerosis. Immunomodulatory NKT cells combine properties of classical T lymphocytes and NK cells and current observations indicate their evident pro-atherogenic role in the vascular cell wall.
