The geriatric patient population is particularly exposed to the consequences of pain. Ageing of cells and tissues, progressive systemic insufficiency, and the coexistence of many diseases are favourable conditions for the development of chronic pain. This is particularly true for locomotor pain. This leads to progressive motor and functional disability, increased risk of falls, depressive and anxiety disorders, abuse of analgesics and sleeping pills, dependence on family and environment, and increased use of medical services. Treatment of chronic pain in geriatric patients should take into account the specificity of this age group. Non-opioid drugs, opioids, and adjuvants are used in therapy. The dosage of drugs and intervals between doses should be chosen individually. Polypharmacy in elderly people in the treatment of chronic pain is an important problem in everyday clinical practice.
