PDT involves the administration of photosensitizer by local illumination of the tumor with light of the appropriate wavelength to activate the specific drug. The unigue properties and benefits make it good for local treatment of superficial epithelial disorders. Photosensitizer used in therapy of vulvar diseases is 5-aminolevulinic acid – induced protoporphirin IX. Although still existing problems with dosimetry, PDT is slowly gaining acceptance as an alternative to conventional therapies.
PDT is promising method in the treatment of vulvar diseases, especially lichen sclerosus, vulvodynia, VIN, condylomata accuminata.
