Cough is most common in children. Physiologically it is needed to purify respiratory tract from mucus, dead epithelial cells and aspirated foreign bodies as well. Acute cough, lasting up to 4 weeks, accompanies every respiratory tract infection. Persistent cough can occur due to abnormalities caused by infection, especially viral, or due to different disorders, not connected with infections. Post-infectious bronchial hyperreactivity and transient mucous-ciliary transport disfunction are rated among first group. Among second – asthma and allergic rhinitis. Asthma should be always diagnosed according to GINA criteria, cough variant of asthma, without clinical symptoms of bronchospasm occurs in children rarely. In differential diagnosis of persistent cough in children infections caused by opportunistic pathogens, such as Pneumocystis jiroveci, Candida, Aspergillus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, should be always taken under consideration.
