Allergen immunotherapy changes the natural course of IgE-dependent allergic diseases (the course of a given illness and allergic march). It should be introduced as early as possible. Currently available preparations and methods of allergen immunotherapy produce many years' prevention effects in patients with allergic rhinitis (prevention of asthma) and decrease the risk of new allergies in patients with allergic rhinitis or asthma. Allergen immunotherapy might be given subcutaneously or sublingually, the latter being particularly effective in pollen allergic rhinitis. Allergic immunotherapy has a high level of safety, both local and systemic, which enables one to manage the therapy based on a simple therapeutic plan in children and in adults.
