Introduction. The contemporary diabetes care cannot exist without health education, which is included in nurse’s code of conduct.
The bill from 05.07.1996 and the decree from 07.11.2007 clearly define educational functions of nurses which concern the preparation of
patients for self care.

Aim of the study. The aim of the study was assessment of the level of knowledge of diabetes patients as well as participation of nurses in
diabetes education.

Material and methods. In the study, the author conducted an analysis of literature which concerned health education in the process of
taking care of diabetes patients.

Results. The level of knowledge of diabetes patients is insufficient to proceed with self care.

Conclusions. The participation of nurses in educating diabetes patients is insufficient. There is a need for professional training for nurses
concerning diabetes education.
