Autoimmune thyroid disorders are the most frequent organ-specific autoimmune diseases. The presence of autoantibodies to the thyroid gland is distinctive. The major antigens in thyroid autoimmune diseases are thyroid peroxidase and TSH receptor. The presence of thyroid autoantibodies in other autoimmune diseases is more frequent then in general population. Hypothyroidism is the most frequent autoimmune thyroid disorder in extra thyroid diseases, and the presence of thyroid auto antibodies is associated with higher risk of hypothyroidism. Among connective tissue diseases primary Sjögren Syndrome mostly coexists with autoimmune thyroid disorders. The presence of thyroid auto antibodies is also frequent in rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus patients. The experts' opinions regarding recommendations of thyroid function screening in rheumatic disease are not homogeneous, but this screening is recommended in primary Sjögren Syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus patients.
