Aging brings with it mental health problems that have been treated before (e.g. depression or anxiety disorders), but also currently developing, often due to the senior’s external circumstances (e.g. loss of loved ones, loneliness, deteriorating independence) or somatic diseases (e.g. diabetes, neurological diseases). Such problems include sleep disorders, neurobehavioral symptoms accompanying dementia, and depressive or anxiety states. Quetiapine, even though it belongs to antipsychotics, due to its wide range of effects directly on receptors and its active metabolite with antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects, has become a substance used in various psychiatric disorders, including those mentioned above (although off-label, i.e. outside of the registration indications). This article will describe selected psychiatric disorders in seniors and the potential use of quetiapine for them.
