Dear Colleagues,
it is our great pleasure to present you the fourth and last issue of 2018.
We are pleased to announce that English has become the main language of publications in our journal. The funds obtained by the Chief Editors from the Grant of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for raising the scientific level and internationalization of the Pediatric Endocrinology Dia-betes and Metabolism journal help in the implementation of many tasks.
We are glad to receive works from outside Poland, which proves that our journal is significant to the international medical community. It is also important for the whole medical community to work together so that our works get as many citations as possible.
Authors from Tunisia undertook the assessment of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis us-ing a glucagon stimulation test in children with idiopathic growth hormone deficiency, stating adrenal insufficiency in almost 30%. The problem is even more important, especially that a substantial propor-tion of patients does not present clinical symptoms.
The multi-centre study (Gdańsk, Łódź, Białystok, Katowice) presents neonatal results and the course of diabetes in children with GCK-MODY born by women with diagnosed GCK-MODY diabe-tes. It has been shown that during pregnancy the possible consequences of GCK-MODY on fetal de-velopment are less serious and may differ from those specific for other types of diabetes. Children born to mothers with diabetes should be monitored for glucose disturbances. The authors emphasize the need to conduct further studies of GCK-MODY phenotypes, depending on the type of inherited mutation in mothers and their children.
The prevalent deficiency of vitamin D and its supplementation prompted the Cracow team to evaluate the introduction of new, updated Polish recommendations on the example of one pediatric center. The authors confirmed the urgent need to introduce proper education of patients regarding the principles of vitamin D supplementation at the level of primary care, because nowadays everyday practice differs significantly from the recommendations of experts. Physical activity of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and Polish and global recommendations for physical activity together with modern methods of its evaluation were presented by colleagues from Rzeszów.
