Introduction. Studies conducted in Poland and the world show that the greatest exposure to burnout exists among medical staff and most
concerns of nurses.

Aim of the study. Assessment of exposure to stress and burnout of nurses working in a closed health care in the province of Podlaskie,
depending on the job.

Material and methods. The study was conducted in the last quarter of 2009 among 102 nurses working in a closed health care in the
Podlaskie province. The research method was a diagnostic survey. All data obtained are analyzed statistically.

Results. The study population 72.6% of nurses were exposed to stress in the workplace. Nurses of internal department most often had
symptoms of the burnout syndrome (47.1% of nurses had emotional exhaustion, depersonalization — 20.6% and 70.7% had job satisfaction).

Conclusions. In the studied population of nurses we found that high levels of stress affected the low level of burnout syndrome. However,
the occurrence of stress depended on the respondents’ job.
