Diagnosis and treatment of depression in primary care setting – practical aspects

It is estimated that about one third of patients in primary care have symptoms of mental disorders, the most common of which are sleep disorders, depression and anxiety disorders. Also, patients experiencing somatic illness as a primary condition often experience lowered mood in many cases together with anxiety and sleep problems.

This article discusses the general principles of diagnosing depressive disorders and the diagnostic criteria for depression. Special clinical situations have also been identified, where symptoms or behaviors mask and hide underlying depressive symptoms. In discussing the pharmacotherapy of depression the possibility of distinguishing three groups of antidepressants with different clinical activity profiles was proposed. The criterion for distinguishing these groups of drugs is their effect on such symptoms as anger, anhedonia and anxiety in depression.
